Other impairments

Besides the reduced availability of food and habitats, other factors can also negatively affect open land species. Above all, increased recreational pressure can have a negative impact on sensitive species. Regular disturbances by hikers, geocachers, cars and free running dogs have a negative impact on habitat quality. In the case of sensitive bird species, this can lead to the abandonment of breeding. For bats every disturbance in their winter quarters comes with a high costs of energy, as they accelerate their metabolism by waking up. This energy is then lacking at the end of winter, when their reserves are used up. For this reason, the opening of quarries or caves for tourists in particular is an impairment of the bats’ winter roosts.
